The Bag Factory is delighted to present the 2023 Edition of the Young/Unframed project.
The project forms part of a broader Bag Factory programme focused on supporting professionally and providing platforms for both young artists and aspiring curators based in Johannesburg. In 2023, we commissioned three artists to produce new work for their first solo presentation. Each artist received financial and curatorial support, and the space to experiment using the Bag Factory’s studio space to create new and/or site-specific work. Emerging curators on the other hand received pastoral support, hands-on practical experience and mentorship from the Bag Factory’s team to realise the exhibition.
YOUNG/UNFRAMED is a short-term creative residency for young artists and aspirant curators that offers the awarded recipients an opportunity to work together towards realising a solo exhibition for each team of paired artists and curators.
It aims at providing young professionals with an opportunity to experiment and create a new body of work.
3 Artists | 3 Curators | 3 Solo Exhibitions
To: IDENTITIES
Exhibition of artworks by Tshepo Pokojoe
curated by Kamogelo Walaza
To: IDENTITIES serves as a reflective journey, navigating the diverse landscapes of self discovery, societal perceptions, and the ever-evolving nature of who we are. From traditional canvases to mixed-media installations, the artworks act as mirrors: reflecting the
rich tapestry of human experiences; and drawing attention to the interplay of race, gender, culture, and personal history within the never-ending game of identity formation.
Motlatsi
Exhibition of artworks by Nonceba Dwanya
curated by Amina Malatji
Motlatsi, is an exhibition which explores images of the artist's mother through portraiture, by revisiting various moments in her mother’s youth - her becoming - which was at times a non typical performance of womanhood and her relationship with the feminine.
Of Place and the Uncertain
Exhibition of artworks by Smiso Cele
curated by Motheo Mamabolo
The City of Gold is an amalgamation of all types of intangibles, perhaps most evident is a looming anxiety. We never shake off the feeling of not knowing what the next day will bring. The uncertainty births a constant productivity - to create what will come next. Seldom are we told to take five. Look around. What do you see?
Of Place and the Uncertain explores the idea of Unknowing as a mother and as a connecting force.
The Young/Unframed Project is supported by the Department of Sports, Arts & Culture, Republic of South Africa, the National Arts Council and The Creative Uprising Hub, at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg.
