Bag Factory Artists’ Studios has two self-funded Artist in Residence opportunities available to artists and curators based anywhere in the world who would benefit from a period of uninterrupted time to focus on developing their work.
The Bag Factory is a professional studio space, located on the border of the vibrant suburbs of Fordsburg and Newtown in Johannesburg. We have been operating for more than 28 years and have a stable community of artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. The studio space and its community strive for an open, non-hierarchical creative environment that promotes exchange and experimentation. Artists from all over the world have come to the Bag Factory to work alongside our talented artists and to meet, work, and grow within South Africa’s economic capital.
Johannesburg is one of the busiest visual-art hubs in Africa. Apart from averaging three gallery openings a week, the city is filled with the bustle and momentum that infects artists and audiences alike. The Bag Factory Artists’ Studios offers artists an amazing opportunity to experience the vibrant visual arts scene of Johannesburg.
The Self-funded Artist in Residence programme offers preferential space for professional artists and curators who can finance their self-directed studio residency at the Bag Factory for two months.
The available residency dates as follows:
AIR 1: 1 April – 31 May 2019
AIR 2: 1 May – 30 June 2019

This includes a non-residential studio space at the Bag Factory for 2 months, a facilitation of your stay whilst in the city, an artists’ welcome presentation event at the beginning of the residency, and an open studio event at the end of the residency. Optional detailed reports are available on request for an additional charge if required for funding purposes.
