Resident Artist Anke Schafer

For the first quarter of 2007 The Bag Factory welcomes German photographer and video artist Anke Schafer.  She will exhibit new work that she has produced during her residency in Johannesburg at the end of March.

Photomarathon

As part of its About Art Programme, The Bag Factory hosted Johannesburg’s first ever Photomarathon.  The event organized by PhotographySA.com and entitled PhotographySA.com photomarathon 2007 :: Johannesburg consisted of three parts:  the marathon event on the 24th February 2007, a panel discussion with the 3 competition judges on their own professional practice as photographers in the city of Johannesburg and the final exhibition of work and announcement of winners.

The marathon which started at 8am on 24 February and lasted for 12 hours drew 69 competitors. Each four hours, participants received four new themes at a new venue, moving throughout downtown Johannesburg. At the end of the event, at 8pm on the same day, participants had to submit exactly one photograph for each theme.  There were two categories, one for digital photography and one for analogue.  The themes were in order Alien; Mother  City; Technophobia; Bundu Bashing; Tokoloshe; Snake Eyes; Yours Is Bigger Than Mine; Shebeen Queen; Lost In Translation; Diamonds And Rust; Metropolis; Running With Scissors.

The judges were asked to select a winning photograph and a winning series from both digital and analogue categories.  However, they struggled to select one series amongst many exceptional responses by both professional and amateur photographers.  It was then decided to spread the acknowledgement around some more and award prizes to 13 individual photographs.  The two main winners received an ipod shuffle and an A2 size print of their winning image, whilst 11 other images were awarded an A3 enlargement and bags in varying sizes sponsored by http://www.crumpler.co.za

See the analogue winners here: http://photographysa.com/blogger/2007/03/2007-johannesburg-analogue-winners.asp and the digital http://photographysa.com/blogger/2007/03/2007-johannesburg-digital-winners.asp. All the competitors photos (all 700 of them) were also on display in a grid formation at the exhibition and they can be seen here. http://photographysa.com/participate/results.php

Well done to the overall winners Anthea Pokroy and Marele Joubert and to the runners up Gilli Apter; Elaine Banister; Nina Barnett; Barry Brady; Steven Davies; Allen Jadine; Philip Legate; Steven McKimmie; Robin Paey;  Robert Steenporte and thank you to all those who participated for your energy and creative responses and we hope to see you at the next one.

'Van Boerekitsch en Ander Dinge' invites submissions

Artists are invited to submit works for 'Van Boerekitsch en Ander Dinge'. The aim is for artists to use kitsch, particularly South African kitsch, as a starting point. Final selection of works for the exhibition will happen by means of a selection jury. There is no restriction on media but electronic or specialised equipment will have to be provided by the artists. There is no participation fee, but all costs of production will be carried by the artist. The curator will cover the costs of transportation from gordart Gallery (or a designated place), to Oudtshoorn and back. Artists are welcome to organise their own insurance for works. The exhibition at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) will be secured but gordart Gallery and the curators cannot accept responsibility for the theft or damage (though this is not very likely).

Curator Gordon Froud stated the following about the show: 'This exhibition will relate strongly to our past where we have all been victims of or at least experienced kitsch of some sort in our homes. Whether this was in the form of fluffy dice and oranges on car aerials, nodding dogs, Tretchikoff prints, "Zulu Lulu" dolls, crocheted doilies, zebra skin rugs, 3 ducks on the wall, African wooden figures with springbok skin shields or charming ceramic spotted dogs and doe-eyed cats, we all have seen them in abundance. These tasteless objects tell us much about our history in South Africa and how we as a nation have tried to assimilate each others' cultures and, thank goodness, how we have changed. The rise of Boerekitsch is of particular interest as a new generation of artists and designers are now re-evaluating their political and cultural pasts, making reference to political figures and images of bygone days. Oom Paul Kruger, The Monument, drawings of Blood River, ox wagons, H F Verwoerd and many other images appear on plates, cushions, trays and of course in paintings, sculptures and graphic art forms.

'I curated a show in 2005 called '... of Boerekitsch and other things!' at Merely Mortal Gallery in JHB. It was a raving success, sold well and was well covered in the media because it was light-hearted and poked fun at absolutely everyone and everything. The show at KKNK will extend this idea without re-showing those works (most of which have been sold). It will be a visually exciting show that should attract a large audience because it will have images that most people will relate to. Our country has reached an age where we are able to laugh at ourselves and take light-hearted ownership of our often bad taste pastÖ I look forward to your submissions that should be clever, witty, beautiful and engaging.'

Send images for consideration to:
Email: gordon@gordartgallery.com or
78 Third Ave, Melville 2092

These should reach gordart Gallery by February 28. Artists will be notified of their acceptance or not by Monday March 7.

Proposals invited for 'Flesh!'

2006 Winner of the Kanna prize for Visual Arts at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK), Chris Diedericks, is calling for proposals of works for the exhibition 'Flesh!'. As curator of the show, Diedericks invites artists to propose work that will be cutting-edge and challenging, as opposed to what he calls 'frequently boring and literal erotic shows which are presented as edgy'. Diedericks is aiming to curate 'an erotic show with a difference', and to stimulate thought and debate, not just predictable titillation, shock or disgust.

There is no restriction on media, and Diedericks hopes that responses will be forthcoming in all forms. However, artists requiring specialised equipment for the exhibition of their works will have to provide it themselves. Installations must be accompanied by detailed instructions; physically complicated installations will have to be installed by the relevant artists.

Deadline for final ideas/concepts/photographs/digital images: February 28

Artists will be informed one week later whether their works have been selected for the show.

Email proposals to chrisdiedericks@gmail.com

Month Of People's Photography invites submissions

New theme for Group Exhibition, MOPP 07

Photography creates its own compartments. The photojournalist, the fine artist, the well-paid celebrity, the bohemian dreamer, the purist, the pragmatist, the classical, the hypermodern, the uncropped image, the setup shot, the Gettys. the majority world. the South. the North. the West. the developing world. Red filters, green filters, high pass filters, layers, masks, feathered edges. No photoshop, yes photoshop. Canonites, Nikonites, Leicaphytes, digital, analogue, SLR, Happy snappy.

Anyway, we impose no limits on your mind. However, it's just a theme. So get over it. Go round it. Think of it. Or climb on it. The important thing is that the picture contains a statement. A picture should need no explanation and the method should only create the effect. In that regard, I would say that there are no limits as to the creation of a picture.

The theme for MOPP 07 is 'I Spy with My Third Eye'

Your body of work should not exceed 15 photographs. Send a small collection of zipped .jpeg's to:

Ghettogether@gmail.com
