Looking through the catalogue for the Spier Contemporary Art Award, currently on show at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johan Thom and David Koloane brought my attention to a statement that did not sit well with us at The Bag Factory.

The introductory essay invites the reader to consider, amongst other ‘facts’ that “only small and somewhat intermittent artist-in-residence programmes exist on the African continent.”   This statement rankled because it blatantly overlooks the residency programme that has been running at the BF for nearly ten years.  A residency programme which has seen more than a hundred international artists pass through our studios.

However, it is not only a slight to The BF, but to a large number of residency programmes across the continent which includes Greatmore Studios in Cape Town, Kuoana Trust and Wasanii in Kenya, Batapata in Zimbabwe, Thapong in Botswana, Tulipamwe in Namibia, AfterShave in Nigeria, Atelier Of Alexandria and Dwayer Group for Art in Egypt amongst countless others.

So how does one react to such a statement?  I would perhaps not take it too seriously as many of the other ‘facts’ offered for consideration are ill researched or modeled to suit the aims of the Africa Centre who seek to address the lack of cultural institutions on the continent.  And indeed there is a lack and a place for more organizations and individuals dedicate to the furtherment of arts on this continent.

It is however, a bizarre quirk of many such institutions that they should want to position themselves as the first or only organization engaged in whatever niche is their primary function.  Sometimes this positioning is so that the organization can distance itself from other previously failed projects, but a denial of the past and the lessons that can be learned, is to doom oneself to repeat the mistakes and not the successes. This is also not beneficial to furthering the institution in question’s aims as it alienates itself from those who would otherwise be highly supportive of its cause.

This happens on many levels from individuals to exhibitions and organizations. As arts practioners we need to network, to join forces and be constructively critical so that a healthy competition and therefore, a higher level of production can be maintained.

While this may reduce the personal glory for any one artist or collective, if it is the furtherment of cultural practice (as is so claimed) that is the primary purpose, then personal glory is no trade for long term sustainability.

But the comment in this catalogue also leads one to think, Are we being ignored merely as an intentional oversight by someone too busy to do the research?  Or should we be less arrogant than that and realize that there is a responsibility to disseminate the information about these workshops, residencies and opportunities further than they are currently moving so that it would not be possible for such a statement to be written without every artist responding ‘But that is not true!’

This newsletter contains not only news of the activities of those connected with the BF, but also a wide range of artists’ opportunities both locally and internationally.

So perhaps here is the opportunity to ask you, gentle reader, if you are personally invested in the furtherment of creative output, to forward this newsletter to someone else whom you may think could benefit from the opportunities and information contained in it.

Honorary Doctorate for David Koloane

On March 19 2008 the Vaal University of Technology conferred an honorary doctorate on the cofounder and director of the Bag Factory David Koloane.

The honour was made in recognition of the artist's contribution to South African culture in general and the visual arts in particular.

The acknowledgement is historic in that David Koloane is the first recipient
of this honour during his life-time, as most previous awards to black african artists have been conferred posthumously.

Koloane will celebrate his seventieth birthday in June this year and will exhibited a solo exhibition at Goodman Gallery at the end of May.

Residency Exhibition

On Wednesday March 26, our residency artists - Joël Mpah Dooh (Cameroon); Katrin Lock (UK/Germany); Leticia Vieyra (Mexico) and Shane Aslan Selzer (USA) presented an exhibition of their work to the general public.  Mpah Dooh presented a series of paintings and engravings on metal, Lock screened a video work, Vieyra’s works were delicate combinations of singed paper and plant materials assembled to form organic installations and Selzer’s welded sculptures were complimented by a series of monoprints.

This residency was sponsored by Africa Beyond, Arts Council England, The Mexican Embassy, MTN Foundation Cameroon and The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Dak'Art 2008: Official selection of exhibiting artists announced

'Dak'Art 2008' has announced the official selection of artists for the eighth edition of the Biennale of the Contemporary African Art which will take place in Senegal. The Biennale, which will run from May 9 to June 9, was set up in 1989 with its first edition in 1990 devoted to Literature.

This year's Biennale examines the theme of 'Mirror' and aims to explore the multifaceted realities and the crucial issues facing the continent and those living in it on one hand, and its Diaspora on the other. The 'Mirror' looks at both the casting and the reflecting of an image and examines how these binaries put into perspective a threefold questioning: that of attributed identity, attributed and accepted identity, and attributed and rejected identity.

Included in this year's selection are 35 artists from 17 African countries and the Diaspora. Senegal, (with ten artists), Cameroon (with five artists), South Africa (with four) and Egypt (with three) are the most widely represented countries in the 2008 selection.

The four South Africans exhibiting are previous resident artist at the Bag Factory, Athi Patra Ruga, Nandipha Mntambo, Nkosikhona Ngcobo and Sonya Rademeyer.

For a full list of the selected creatives visit: http://www.biennaledakar.org/breve-en.php3

Hyslop presents a series of prints that explore new takes on portraiture as part of the show 'Faces' on at Resolution gallery.  Also on show are Spanish artist Angel Haro, Alf Khumalo, George Mahashi, Mark Shoul and Sally Shorkend.

The Goodman Gallery hosted Rose’s solo show where she offers a new body of work entitled ‘Plantation Lullabies’ and

Ricky Burnett, who has stayed on after completing his residency at the BF, shows a new collection of paintings in ‘Margins’ at the Everard Read Gallery.

David Koloane has been working fervently towards his solo exhibition which will open at the Goodman Gallery on May 24.  Please see http://www.goodman-gallery.com/coming.html for more details.

Artist Proof Studio auction sale

On April 10, Artist Proof Studio held an auction sale of its collection of publication proofs and portfolios.  These works by artists who have collaborated at APS were auctioned to raise the funds required to support the bursaries of new students.

Works on auction included the Artist Proof Studio collection and donations by William Kentridge, Sam Nhlengethwa, Wim Botha, Helen Sebidi, Penny Siopis, Dianne Victor, Dinkies Sithole, Paul Molete, Robert Hodgins, Deborah Bell, Lucas Nkgweng, Kim Berman, Brett Murray, Paul Edmunds, Wayne Barker, Phillemon Hlungwani, Dumisani Mabaso, Pat Maotloa, Marjorie Maleka, Nelson Makamo, Marco Cianfanelli and many more.

The auction, which was hosted by Linda Givon of the Goodman Gallery, was incredibly successful and managed to raise approximately R900 000 for the new student bursaries.

Fred Koenig and Steven Cohen at KHOJ International Performance Art Festival

Previous French residency artist Fred Koenig along with South African performance artist Steven Cohen took part the first ever International Performance Art Festival in New Delhi which was organized in celebration of a decade of KHOJ’s active engagement in the Arts in India. KHOJ has a taken a longstanding supportive role within performance art practice, beginning with the first International Workshop in 1997 to more recent international residencies devoted solely to the genre.

The festival involved a six day programme of events which brought together Indian and international performance artists in an attempt to showcase the different currents, positions and possibilities of contemporary performance art.

Apart from Koenig and Cohen, participants include Hassan Khan, Sonia Khurana, Oreet Ashery, Sonia Khurana, Zuleikha Chaudhari, Reza Afsina, Monali Meher, Inder Salim, Sarnath Banerjee, Shantanu Lodh Manmeet, Nikhil Chopra, Amitesh Grover, Boris Nieslony, DA MOTUS, Ingrid Mwangi, Maya Krishna Rao, Mehr Javed, Neha Choksi, Ray Langenbach, Rehan Engineer, Varsha Nair and Ashmina Ranjit.

PUSHPLAY>>: Exhibition of Emerging Video Art at The Bag Factory

A selection of video art by up-and-coming South African artists was exhibited at the Bag Factory in conjunction with the Johannesburg Art Fair.

The exhibition was organised by Rat Western who took work from the artists’ online collective SAartsEmerging.org, a collaborative web platform which promotes the work of South African artists though feature reviews, exhibition advertisements and other news links following the career paths of its associated artists. SAartsEmerging.org has an open call for applications to join the website.

The Bag Factory welcomed PUSHPLAY>> as part of its exhibition programme which aims to further the needs of the local Johannesburg art scene.

PUSHPLAY>> was SAartsEmerging.org's fourth physical manifestation having exhibited previously in Johannesburg, Cape Town and most recently in February as part of the fringe of the Rotterdam Art Fair.

The line up included Lester Adams, Nina Barnett, Shane de Lange, Anthea Moys, Anthea Pokroy, Rat Western and a live multi-channelled video and sound performance by MTKIDU and Ismail Farouk.

Previous Residencey Artists and Current Resident Studio Artists Come Together for Esikhaleni – Spatial Practices

Also on the fringe of the Johannesburg Art Fair, The Dead Revolutionaries Club (of which Sharlene Khan, BF residency artist in 2002, is a member), in association with Claudia Shneider (who was a BF residency artist in 2003) and the Afrika Cultural Centre (ACC) put together an exhibition at the ACC.

The premise of the exhibition was a contemplation on the use of space at ACC, an historic site of struggle, teaching and interdisciplinary arts collaborations. The exhibition interrogates the privileging of spaces within the city and the inner city in particular. Why does one area receive funding while others remain in obscurity? How do physical spaces catalyze the making of artworks? Why are spaces deployed for which purpose in the city?

Artists involved included Amos Letsoalo, Beverly Price, Claudia Shneider, Dinkies Sithole, Johan Thom, Kemang wa Lehulere, Lonwabo Kilani, Nicoleen Naidoo, Senzo Nhlapo, Sharlene Khan and Thabang Lehobye

Democracy Begins in Conversation

The Living Together Institute project 'Democracy Begins in Conversation', a project which was part of The Bag Factory’s Outreach programme last year, has again come together at the BF to workshop an installation.  The installation, produced using found objects, will form part of a performance which will take place at Constitutional Hill on April 28.

'Democracy Begins in Conversation' brings together youth from KwaThema, Daduza, Orange Farm, Hillbrow and Lenasia in a creative workshop which grapples with many social concerns facing the youth today.

Carrol Boyes Announces Theme for METAL 2008

Ever searching for fresh new design talent across South Africa, Carrol Boyes Functional Art (CBFA) has announced the theme for the METAL 2008 New Designer Search: 'Frame'.

METAL is the fourth annual New Designer Search designed to discover and nurture new product design talent in South Africa. METAL invites aspirant designers to submit a prototype based on a specific theme.

Organisers of this year's initiative invite aspirant product designers to create a prototype of a frame - a structure that can contain or border any article of beauty such as a mirror, an artwork, an image, an item of jewellery or the like. Carrol Boyes, arguably one of South Africa's most commercially successful product designers, explains her choice of theme: 'A frame may hold a special memory, reflect a shared moment or simply contain a gift from someone close. I would like to encourage entrants to be inspired by these moments whilst designing and creating their prototypes so that these may reflect their uniqueness. I hope the theme inspires designers to create something completely original in form.'
