April 2007

So I keep waiting for the dust to settle so I can write.  But it doesn’t seem to be happening.  As the fall-out of ideas rains down in the aftermath of another successful yet exhausting project, there always seems to be something of more interest to explore.  To throw upward again and juggle with all the other gravity bound particles.  In all the juggling I begin to realise how, as art practitioners or maybe just individuals in a modern world, we are very much like children’s party clowns.  Juggle, juggle, juggle.  Swap one silly hat for another.  Take the skinny budget, inflate it with your own hot air, pull, twist and make an animal shaped balloon.  Some of us are better at this than others and some twist and pull too hard which, POP, leaves you with a useless rubber rag and a crowd of people laughing at how rubbish you are even if they can’t make balloon animals themselves.

It’s a draining process all this juggling and multiple hat wearing.  Very often, one needs to not only make the art, but then provide the platform to show the artwork and then write the press release and invite the people and the press, provide the snacks and drinks and when that’s all over to write about the event too.  Artist, curator, gallerist, media and marketing liaison, caterer and journalist.  Remember that next time you’re making small talk at a function and someone asks you what you do for a living.

Because it is so hard to maintain all of this, when the opportunity arises of a large scale platform with accompany funding and team of assistants it is no wonder those of us who have been struggling along juggling all the hats sometimes end up poking each others' eyes out in a scramble for that helping hand.  But despite this I'm continually surprised by the underhanded back stabbing that passes itself very thinly as critical engagement.

In particular I have been observing the commentary surrounding the selection of curatorial projects for the African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. http://www.artnet.com/magazineus/news/artnetnews/artnetnews2-23-07.asp

Amongst all the questioning of ethics surrounding this choice which will put a large number of works from the Sindika Dokolo African Collection of Contemporary Art on show I can not help wondering if ethics is really the question which has so many in a debate.  It seems to me to be more a picking at a winning proposal in a case of sour grapes.  Especially in the context of South Africa where the current ethical police in the case of the Dokolo collection were not so long ago vying for accolades in the dubiously sponsored Brett Kebble awards.

Yes, there are ethical problems with the Dokolo collection but are there not also ethical questions surrounding the very idea of an African Pavilion - one curated show to represent an entire content filled with diverse artistic practise?   If we are to be purist about where we take our funding should we not always be on are guard for ethical concerns or can we sometimes take the support in good faith and in the belief that we can make good money and interaction from bad?

When one has to get into a debate around ethics it makes one sit back and contemplate the very nature of this art thing that we do and asks the questions why and for whom?

What is the function of the clown?  To entertain and amuse?  To narrate, like the character of the fool in Shakespeare, the bigger picture and tell the truth in jest?  To make social commentary on the community like a medieval court jester?  It is not a comfortable position and neither is the position of the artist.

There is no answer to the ethics question.  It’s a personal question.  But what is important is consistency.  If one chooses to argue a line of ethics one must be consistent in that.  Equally, if one chooses to turn a blind eye to the dubious nature of one funding source one can not argue the demerits of another especially when that opportunity is not in one's favour.

It is not always easy to live this way all the time, but it is important at least to admit to ourselves whether or not we conduct our practice with integrity.

News Bytes

Madi Phala

At the beginning on March, we at the Bag Factory were shocked by the news of the sudden death of artist, designer, educator and original 'herd-boy', Madi PhalaPhala, an artist resident at Greatmore Studios for the past 3 years, was also part of the Bag Factory's visiting artist programme from April - May in 2005 as well as a long time friend of several of the Bag Factory artists.

Madi Phala was laid to rest on 10 March in Kwa-Thema, Springs.  Our condolences go out to Madi's family at this difficult time. Read a tribute to MAdi Phala from the Greatmore Studios here: http://www.greatmoreart.org/newsletter_feb_mar_07.htm#ed

Photomarathon

As part of its About Art Programme, The Bag Factory hosted Johannesburg’s first ever Photomarathon.  The event organized by PhotographySA.com and entitled PhotographySA.com photomarathon 2007 :: Johannesburg consisted of three parts:  the marathon event on the 24th February 2007, a panel discussion with the 3 competition judges on their own professional practice as photographers in the city of Johannesburg and the final exhibition of work and announcement of winners.

The marathon which started at 8am on 24 February and lasted for 12 hours drew 69 competitors. Each four hours, participants received four new themes at a new venue, moving throughout downtown Johannesburg. At the end of the event, at 8pm on the same day, participants had to submit exactly one photograph for each theme.  There were two categories, one for digital photography and one for analogue.  The themes were in order Alien; Mother  City; Technophobia; Bundu Bashing; Tokoloshe; Snake Eyes; Yours Is Bigger Than Mine; Shebeen Queen; Lost In Translation; Diamonds And Rust; Metropolis; Running With Scissors.

The judges were asked to select a winning photograph and a winning series from both digital and analogue categories.  However, they struggled to select one series amongst many exceptional responses by both professional and amateur photographers.  It was then decided to spread the acknowledgement around some more and award prizes to 13 individual photographs.  The two main winners received an ipod shuffle and an A2 size print of their winning image, whilst 11 other images were awarded an A3 enlargement and bags in varying sizes sponsored by http://www.crumpler.co.za

See the analogue winners here: http://photographysa.com/blogger/2007/03/2007-johannesburg-analogue-winners.asp and the digital http://photographysa.com/blogger/2007/03/2007-johannesburg-digital-winners.asp. All the competitors photos (all 700 of them) were also on display in a grid formation at the exhibition and they can be seen here. http://photographysa.com/participate/results.php

Well done to the overall winners Anthea Pokroy and Marele Joubert and to the runners up Gilli Apter; Elaine Banister; Nina Barnett; Barry Brady; Steven Davies; Allen Jadine; Philip Legate; Steven McKimmie; Robin PaeyRobert Steenporte and thank you to all those who participated for your energy and creative responses and we hope to see you at the next one.

Other About Art news

About Art has rerun two of last year's successful programmes; Interactive Computing (this time taught by Tegan Brislow) and the How to enhance your NAC funding application (with Jill Waterman).  The About Art programme has an extensive list of planned activities for the rest of the year and we will be keeping you updated as the dates are confirmed.

About Art is the Bag Factory's art education programme which focuses on stimulating, enriching and advancing the careers of professional practicing artists within its local community as well as its wider arts network.  For more info please contact Bronwyn Lace at bronwyn@bagfactoryart.org.za

Phillip Legate Looking To Loan A Camera

Phillip Legate, one time maintenance man and current Residency Liaison Officer at the Bag Factory is looking to loan a small video camera (e.g. Sony TRV 1CCCD camera).  In the wake of his success on the Photomarathon (where he received a third prize for his photo 'Bundu bashing')  he is feeling inspired to pursue a concept he has had for a while involving public movement through space as subconscious choreography.  For this project he requires a small video camera.  The size is more important than the quality and the camera need not be top of the range in anyway as he is most concerned with filming his subject in a subtle way that will not draw attention to the fact he is filming.  If anyone has a small camera that they are prepared to lend Phillip or rent to him for a nominal fee or even to sell,  Please contact rat@bagfactoryart.org.za.

SAarts Cape 07

As part of Cape 07’s fringe show X-Cape SAartsEmerging.org (the emerging artists’ website maintained by Bronwyn Lace (Bag Factory Education Officer) and Rat Western (yours truly) exhibited a group show featuring 14 artists from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Grahamstown.  The show was exhibited at the Vega Brand Communications school in Greenpoint.  It was a great networking opportunity for the artists involved and a chance to see what else was exhibited during the Cape 07 show.

I was some what disappointed to find that most of the video works were not working and that some of the work on the main show was poorly hung.  It was also quite difficult to figure out what shows were happening where and when as the information booklet was badly designed.  These are not funding problems but organisational ones and I am critical of this, not because I mean to disparage what effort was put in by the Cape Africa Platform but because I believe if these things are smoothed out it will make the event more successful in future.

Still, several 100 people visiting a city for the sake of art can never be a bad thing provided they are inspired to repeat the exercise.

We also managed to make a trip to the Bag Factory's network partner in Cape Town, Greatmore Studios where we received a warm welcome and were shown around to meet the artists and see their work.

Bag artists at Cape Goodman

Bag Factory artists and David Koloane's co-directors Sam Nhlengethwa and Kagiso Pat Mautloa, exhibited at the launch of the Goodman Gallery Cape in Fairweather House, 176 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock.  The exhibition entitled 'Lift Off' will be shown in two parts as the new space, designed by award-winning architect, Jeremy Rose, can not accommodate all the artists Goodman represents.  The first part where Nhlengethwa and Mautloa exhibited opened on 22 March 2007 at 18:00 and runs until 28 April 2007.  The second instalment will open on 5 May to run until 26 May 2007.  For more information on the new gallery please visit the website http://www.goodmangallerycape.com. Or read a review of the show at http://www.artthrob.co.za/07apr/reviews/goodmanc.html

Anke Schafer: Residency exhibition Being Here.

Bag Factory German residency artist Anke Schafer exhibited the products of her residency in a show entitled Being Here.  Though a series of photographs and video pieces she explores idiosyncrasies of environment  and identity politics that are core to the current condition of living in Johannesburg.  The results show an attention to detail and careful research that is based purely on her experiences here and not presumed ideas garnered from international press.  Schafer brings new light to some themes that have been explored many times in a local context.  This novelty is the evidence of the sincerity and open mindedness with which she approached her residency experience at the Bag Factory.

Anke Schafer leaves us on the 16th of April and we will be welcoming our next set of residency artists who will be working on a specifically photography based residency.
